Weakly-Interacting Singlet-Triplet Magnetic Systems: Application to Copper Nitrate.

Abstract

A series of studies in this laboratory has indicated that Cu(NO3)2.2.5H2O behaves approximately as an assembly of anti-ferromagnetically (AF) coupled pairs of Cu(2+) effective spin 1/2 ions. The Heisenberg binary pair system has a singlet ground state and a triplet excited state. Systematic discrepancies between theory and experiment have pointed to the necessity of including weak, AF, inter-pair interactions of a 1-D type. EPR studies have favored a magnetic ladder model structure. (Modified author abstract)
