Balloonborne Aerosol Particle Concentration and Size Distribution Measurements.

Abstract

An instrument was developed to measure the concentration and size distribution of particulates in the atmosphere. Since the concentration of natural aerosols in the free atmosphere above the surface layer is less than one particle per cc, extreme precautions have to be taken to avoid contamination from the instrumentation package, including the balloon itself. Various aspects of balloonborne aerosol measurements are discussed in their relationship to the balloon as the vehicle and measurement platform. (Modified author abstract)
