A Statistical Theory for the Fracture of Transversely Isotropic Brittle Materials of Moderate Anisotropy.

Abstract

The author's physically based statistical theory for the fracture of brittle, isotropic materials is extended to apply to the case of moderately anisotropic materials. The principal modification is to change the polar diagrams of the critical stresses of cracks from spheres in the case of isotropic materials to ellipsoids for anisotropic materials. Special consideration is given to plane isotropic materials such as ATJ-S graphite. (Author)
