Experimental Measurement of Oscillator Strengths in Neutral Neon, Argon and Krypton Using the Roschdestvenskii Hook Method.

Abstract

Experimental measurements of relative f-values using the Roschdestvenskii 'hook method' have been obtained for neon, argon and krypton for the lines occurring in transitions between the two lowest excited configurations. Interference fringe patterns produced by a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, having the electrically excited gas in one beam, were analyzed spectrally to obtain the relative f-values. Using relative intensity measurements of lines arising from different lower values, the population ratios between the levels were determined, which were used with the f-sum rule to compute absolute f-values. Absolute transition probabilities and f-values were determined for 23 neon lines, 15 argon lines and 12 krypton lines. Comparisons with previously existing data show very good agreement.
