An Investigation into the Influence of Surface Pre-Treatment by Particle Impact on the Strength of Adhesive Joints between Like Steel Surfaces.

Abstract

A study is made of the effect of particle impact surface pre-treatment (grit blasting) ON THE BONDING OF STEEL SURFACES USING A STRUCTURAL ADHESIVE. Mile steel and stainless steel cylinders are prepared for bonding by eighteen different methods of grit blasting and three methods of chemical pre-treatment. The cylinders are then bonded two by two co-axially using an epoxy film adhesive cured at 100 -180 C. The influence of different abrasive powders, nozzle pressures and angles of incidence between the jet and the adherend surface, on the joint strengths produced, is measured by stressing the joints in shear and in tension.
