Fungus Resistance of Propelling Charges of 81 mm M374A2El Cartridges for Mortars.

Abstract

This report contains an evaluation of the susceptibility to fungi of the organic materials used in two types of 81 mm mortar car-tridges. The components were inoculated with a mixed fungal spore suspension and incubated on a mineral-salts agar medium. The intact propelling charge of the M374A2 cartridge was fungus resistant, and its components (silk-acetal fabric and M9 pro- pellant) supported no fungus growth. The intact propelling charge of the M374A2E1 cartridge supported a medium amount of growth. The charge included a celluloid plastic covering, M10 propellant and cotton cloth. (AM-PL)
