Expansion of Superheated Metals,

Abstract

The report presents optical, high-speed, image-converter photographs of exploding wires of Cu up to the time of arc formation. These are compared with correlated, flash x-ray pictures of experimentally identical explosions. These provide a more definite description than formerly of the process of striation formation and its relation both to the electrical pulse and to the vapor cloud around the wire. The evidence obtained suggests an essential connection between the striations and the vaporization wave. (Author)
