Forward Air Controller - Tactical Air Command Pilot Communication Orientation.
Abstract
The overall objective of the research was to determine if a standardized lexicon of terrain features could be of benefit to Forward Air Controllers (FACs) and Tactical Strike Pilots (TACs) in target acquisition operations. Sixty experienced pilots were asked to view aerial photographs of 21 different terrain features, and to state what they would call each feature and list characteristics of each. There were five major research objectives: Review of the scientific literature pertinent to FAC-TAC communication orientation, the experimental determination of the most commonly used terrain descriptors, development of a standardized lexicon, an evaluation of the performance of aircraft pilots using the derived lexicon, and a separate effort to determine the applicability of the theory of signal detection to real-time perceptual problems of FAC-TAC operations.
