Angle of Attack Computation System

Abstract

The results of a program to evaluate computing angle-of-attack by inference using air data, aircraft acceleration, surface positions and stored aerodynamic data are presented in this report. The computation was implemented in an analog type airborne computer and evaluated in a U.S. Air Force RF-4C aircraft. The mathematical relationships selected for calculating the aircraft angle-of-attack, the system implementation and the flight test program are described herein. The flight test data is reduced, and computed angle-of-attack is compared to the output of an externally mounted vane. As indicated by the results, computed angle-of-attack is feasible and accurate with normally available onboard aircraft sensors.
