Lateral Variations of Velocity within the 'Transparent' Layer of the Central Equatorial Pacific.
Abstract
The interval velocity of the upper 'transparent' layer of sediment was determined at several locations in the central equatorial Pacific by the wide-angle reflection method. The locations can be separated into two groups relatively low and high velocity by lines paralleling the local structural trends. The processes suggested as being responsible for this grouping are the erosional action of bottom currents moving relatively higher velocity material downslope and the differentiation of sediment type by dissolution of carbonate with increasing depth.
