Charge Changing Diffusion of Multicharge State Systems.

Abstract

It is found that the 'spot size' formed by fast metal atoms released at altitudes above 200 km is dominated at practically all pitch angles by by a charge changing diffusion away from the field line of release. The author has derived a diffusion coefficient for charge changing diffusion of multi-charge state systems of which a metal atom is a particular example. This diffusion coefficient has been applied to predicting the 'spot size'. Good agreement has been obtained between predicted 'spot sizes' and those obtained from Monte Carlo calculations.
