Photochemistry of Interhalogen Compounds of Interest as Rocket Propellants.

Abstract

The chemical kinetics of the UV photochemical formations of ClF, ClF3, and ClF3O were investigated experimentally to obtain information relating to optimum conditions and the reaction mechanisms involved. An improved experimental apparatus was developed. A mechanism for ClF3O formation is proposed. The photolysis of ClF3 was also investigated and a mechanism proposed. At a wavelength of 365 nm, the quantum yield of the reaction ClF + F2 + hv to ClF3 was found to be about one and that of the reaction Cl2 + F2 + hv to 2 ClF to be considerably less than one.
