Stereographic Projection of Radar Data in a Netted Radar System

Abstract

The processing of data from a netted radar system may conveniently be described in terms of the 'conversion' of radar data into rectangular coordinates in a plane with the radar site as origin and the 'transformation' of these coordinates into rectangular coordinates in the plane of a common system of coordinates. The report focuses on the transformation aspect of the stereographic projection and completely derives the transformation equation both in complex notation and in terms that are suitable for real time computation. Contours of constant distortion induced by the projection process are presented. The effect of the choice of an earth's radius upon the distortion is quantitatively examined. Finally, the complete stereographic conversion and transformation equations are summarized.
