Wave Induced Oscillations in Harbors: Effect of Energy Dissipators in Coupled Basin Systems,

Abstract

In the present study the variation in harbor response to incident waves was observed as the degree of energy absoprtion was increased around the main basin. Absorbers were arranged along the sidewalls and filters were placed in front of the wave generator. Effects were observed for each condition independently and for various combinations. The characteristics of the absorbers were defined by computing the efficiency of each as a function of the steepness of waves normally incident upon them. Filters were compared by determining the transmission coefficients derived from the maximum and minimum standing wave heights in the basin. It was found that in a rectangular basin, absorbers reduce the effects of the radiated wave energy and a filter minimizes longitudinal resonant effects. Used in combination they may produce conditions in the basin approaching 'open-sea' characteristics. Methods are proposed which describe the approximation to an 'open-sea' condition which can be attained in a model basin. (Modified author abstract)
