'Trypanosoma lewisi': An in vitro Model System for the Study of Humoral Factors on Growing Parasitic Protozoa.
Abstract
The applications of in vitro techniques developed with Trypanosoma lewisi to strains of Trypanosoma duttoni, Trypanosoma vespertilionis, Trypanosoma dionisii, and Trypanosoma cruzi showed variable growth patterns and physiologic and serologic activities. Somatic and exoantigen preparations contained shared and species specific antigens. Degrees of protective cross-immunity between species of trypanosomes were dependent on the stage and relatedness of the parasites and the methods of immunization. Complement dependent immune cytolysis did not appear to play a significant role in elimination of the parasites during the trypanosome infection (Trypanosoma duttoni). Immunodiffusion analyses did not detect antigenic changes during cultivation, but 2 to 3 common antigens were demonstrated with heterologous antisera. Absorption of antisera with heterologous trypanosome antigens detected two antigens specific to T. vespertilionis and one antigen specific for T. dionisii. (Modified author abstract)
