Experimental Studies of Detection Behaviour,

Abstract

Sixty-six ratings listened for tonal signals in noise, with and without the help of a visual indication that a computer had detected a signal. The computer was found to be of value, its effect depending upon its reliability and upon the frequency with which it indicated that a signal was present. The listeners genuinely combined the two sources of information rather than abandoning either: but the total effect appeared less than the mathematical ideal.
