Investigation of the Use of Carbon Composite Materials for Helicopter Transmission Housing Applications

Abstract

The feasibility of applying advanced fiber reinforced plastic composite material to the UH-1 helicopter main transmission gear housing to increase stiffness of the structure to reduce gear and bearing wear has been investigated. A design analysis was performed for the com-posite transmission housing based on carbon fiber (Modmor I) REINFORCED EPOXY COMPOSITE MATERIAL. Two prototypes were fabricated and tested for stiffness in torsion and tension at ambient and elevated tempera-tures. Testing was also performed on a magnesium case to provide a basis for comparison.
