CONRAD: A Program to Contour Radar Data.

Abstract

A contour generating system (CONRAD) is described whose input is either a UNAMACE created magnetic tape or radar altitude data. CONRAD is a modified version of CONPLOT 2 for a UNIVAC 1108 - EXEC 8 computer. Output of this system is a large cartographic quality contour map which can be combined to form still larger maps. This contour map includes: (a) Universal Transverse Mercator Grid; (b) variable contour levels; (c) multiple labelled and broadened index contours; (d) depression indications; and (e) a variable output plotting scale. The following data handling techniques are used: (a) parallel processing; (b) random access; (c) binary searching; and (d) binary sorting. The internal processing of the input data includes: (a) redundant data elimination; (b) noise elimination and data smoothing by either an Area Smoothing Algorithm or a Least Squares Smoothing Algorithm; (c) automatic mosaicking of multiple models into a single large plotted map; and (d) dynamic allocation of drum storage.
