Investigation of Composite-Coating Systems for Rain-Erosion Protection.

Abstract

To investigate the relative rain-erosion resistance of two-layer composite polyurethane coatings as compared with that of single-layer coatings of the two individual materials, four coating types (single-layer H, single-layer S, composite HS consisting of 9 mils of H applied over 6 mils of S, and composite SH consisting of 9 mils of S applied over 6 mils of H) are prepared. Coatings of the four types are tested for rain-erosion resistance on three different rotating-arm devices and are further subjected to laboratory tests to determine the pressure and loading rate produced at a depth of 15 mils below the surface of the coating by a 'standard impact'. Energy absorbed by the coatings is also determined by making measurements of resilience. (Author, modified-PL)
