Metallic Composites Formed in situ by Reactions in the Solid State.
Abstract
The goal of the program was to develop a scientific basis for the production of aligned two-phase composites by the directional control of solid-state phase transformations. Aligned eutectoids were found to possess substantial mechanical strength and thermal stability, and therefore show promise as high-temperature structural materials. Eutectoid alloys aligned during the study were Co-Si, Fe-Al, Cu-Al, Cu-In, Ni-In, and Ni-Sn. In addition to thermal stability and mechanical strength, other subjects studied were the velocity-spacing relation, interphase crystallographic relationships, and a suggested up-transformation process.
