Multi Element Array Passive Sonobuoy (MAPS), Phase 1.

Abstract

A critical component of the MAPS system is the array platform that serves as the structure from which acoustic sensors are suspended in a prescribed geometry. The array prior to achieving its final configuration must be retracted from its structural housing and forced to erect by means of some external energy. The structure developed and tested by the contractor consisted of crossed horizontal arms developed by telescoping elements with overall tip-to-tip dimensions of 120 feet. The remainder of components that are normally considered part of a complete sonobuoy system were excluded from any consideration. The objective of this cost plus fixed fee contract was to establish the feasibility of a large telescoping tube self-erecting array. (Modified author abstract)
