New Dimensions in Sealift: The Logistician's Challenge in the 1970's.

Abstract

In the years ahead, the Department of Defense will have to rely increasingly on commercial shipping to meet contingency deployment and support requirements. Nearly all of the new dry cargo ships being constructed in the United States are specialized designs. The characteristics and capabilities of these specialized commercial ships were compared with qualitative military requirements for deploying and supporting contingency forces overseas. Data for this comparison was obtained from official studies, from literature on military sealift and from commercial shipbuilders and ship operators. (Modified author abstract)
