Calculation of Morse Wave Functions with Programmable Deskton Calculators,

Abstract

It is very helpful for the student of electronic transitions in diatomic molecules to be able to visualize vibrational wave functions, probability distributions and the overlap of wave functions. As the result of recent advances in programmable calculator technology, it is now possible to calculate and plot these mathematical functions for the Morse potential using a programmable desktop calculator. This report includes (1) a reprint of the journal article which describes techniques for calculating the Morse wave functions, (2) a single precision Morse potential program for the Wang 700B calculator, (3) a double precision Morse potential program for the Wang 720B Calculator, and (4) a double precision Morse potential program for the Burroughs B6700 Computer. Each program is completely documented. Typical results are included to illustrate the proper operation of each program. (Modified author abstract)
