CH-54B Main Gearbox Thermal Mapping Program

Abstract

The report contains the procedures and results of a thermal mapping program conducted on the CH-54B main gearbox. The gearbox was analyzed to determine heat paths and heat sources and was instrumented to measure housing and dynamic component temperatures as well as thermal growth. Thermal maps of the gearbox were made at oil-outlet temperatures of 242F, 280F, 325F, and 372F. MIL-L-7808G oil was used for all tests. The temperatures measured indicated that the present method of analyzing the gearbox is adequate. Thermal growth measurements indicated that the handbook values for thermal coefficient of expansion are adequate for analysis. Recommendations are made for additional research required to develop a self-contained, more survivable gearbox design.
