Development of Carbon Fiber - Resin Composite Materials for Advanced ABM Structures.

Abstract

BER REINFORCEMENT, Matrix materials, Airframes, Guided missiles, Antimissile defense systems, Interceptors*Carbon fiber reinforced plastics, Graphite reinforced composites, Fiber composites, Epoxy matrix, CompositesThis document reports a research study to evaluate high modulus and high strength graphite epoxy composite for use as the primary structure for advanced ballistic missiles. Selected materials for evaluation are the Modmor I and Thornel 300 fibers both impregnated with Fiberite 934 epoxy resin. The study consists of an analytical optimization of the desired layering sequence and fiber orientation for a selected Advanced Terminal Interceptor design requirement, an evaluation of the basic material characteristics, and the fabrication and testing of subscale cylindrical structures. Results show that potentially significant weight savings are possible using graphite epoxy composites; however, to fully realize these savings, material and fabrication processes must be very carefully controlled.
