Design and Flight Evaluation of Charged Particle Detection Systems for Rocket Experiments.

Abstract

Five auroral particle detection systems for use on rockets have been constructed, and four of these flown and the data returned used to evaluate instrument performance. The systems consist of an electrostatic analyzer (ESA) for electrons of 1 to 20 (or 16) keV, an electron scintillator-photomultiplier combination for 20 (or 16) to 200 keV electrons, and either an ESA (for 1 to 20 or 16 keV) or a solid state detector (for 0.2 to 3.8 MeV) for protons.
