The Response of a Sparsely Reinforced Viscoelastic Half-Space to Time-Dependent Surface Load,

Abstract

A viscoelastic half-space sparsely reinforced by parallel elastic fibers is considered. The half-space is subjected to a time-dependent surface impact. The composite is represented by a certain equivalent viscoelastic material. A stable numerical procedure which yields the complete response of the half-space is given. The relaxation functions which describe the viscoelastic behavior are assumed to have a certain factorization property such as the one possessed by the generalized Maxwell model. The normal and shear stresses are shown for various viscoelastic models (including the perfectly elastic case) reinforcement ratios and angles of inclination of the fibers with respect to the impacted surface.
