Feasibility Studies and Development of Preliminary Engineering Data for Alternative Container Discharge Facilities. Volume I.

Abstract

The report summarizes the feasibility studies performed and the preliminary engineering data developed for five alternative Container Discharge Facilities (whose conceptional designs are detailed in Volumes II through VI of this report). These have as their primary and secondary missions, respectively, the discharge of containers from nonself-sustaining containerships and the discharge of general cargo and from general cargo special purpose ships to lighterage or other modes of air and/or waterborne transport in Logistics-Over-The-Shore (LOTS) operations. The scope of the report is restricted to the phase of offloading the cargo, containers primarily, from ships offshore onto lighterage including conventional and proposed landing craft, air cushion vehicles, amphibians and helicopters.
