Feasibility Study for a Non-Printing Portable Teletype

Abstract

The report describes the feasibility study of a visual message terminal (non-printing portable teletype) which is envisioned as a small, lightweight communications device that would attach to Army voice radios and allow communications without the generation of audible sounds. The device would be teletype compatible and would store its messages in internal logic circuitry and display them on a lighted display. The study concludes that a system to accomplish the above is indeed feasible and could be fabricated from components available with the present technology. The system would consist of a small size, teletype-formatted keyboard for data entry into the system. The display would consist of a 96-character LED display. Once the message is inputed into the unit, it would be transmitted out at a higher rate for burst transmissions over audio lines.
