Frequency Analysis in Hearing.

Abstract

The report is devoted to a review of known data and theories and to original insights into the mechanisms of frequency analysis in the auditory system. In particular, it is pointed out that the pitch scale is directly proportional to the excitation distribution in the spiral ganglion rather than to the position of the vibration maximum in the cochlea. This leads to the conclusion that the rest of the auditory system behaves in a linear fashion with respect to the spatial excitation distribution. Furthermore, it is shown that the mechanical frequency resolution is sharpened in the nervous system not only means of lateral inhibition but also by means of stimulus compression along the intensity scale. The meaning of the latter insight for neurophysiological and psychophysical research is pointed out. (Author)
