A Torsional Pendulum for Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Polymers,

Abstract

A torsional pendulum for obtaining the shear modulus and mechanical damping properties of rigid polymers is described. Included are descriptions of the apparatus, preliminary test runs, and the computer programs used to analyze the data. The preliminary runs were conducted on three materials, PMMA, Epon 826 and Epon 828. The results are in good agreement with literature values. This instrument is considered a principal tool for the evaluation of the dynamic mechanical properties of polymers and composites over a broad temperature spectrum. (Author, modified-PL)
