Stored Blood Function.

Abstract

The overall objective of the program is to elucidate the role of blood factors which control and modify retinal metabolism and circulation. To date the feasibility of isolated bovine eyes perfused with fresh and stored blood has been experimentally verified. Blood oxygenation has been thoroughly tested and data compiled. Results indicate that the retina remains viable provided the retinal circulation is flushed from native blood and perfusion is started immediately after enucleation. The diameter of the retinal vessels remains stable as long as the blood parameters are kept constant. (Author)
