Development of Infrared Glass for Reconnaissance and Weapon Delivery.

Abstract

A process was developed for producing blanks of three selected glasses in sizes up to 10 inches diameter by 1 inch thick. The three glasses, As40Se60, Ge5S70As25, and Ge10S60As30, were selected on the bases of their optical dispersion characteristics, their resistance to devitrification, and their thermal stability. The refractive index versus wavelength from 1.0 to 12.0 micrometers was determined for all three glasses. MTF measurements were made to evaluate the optical homogeneity of the blanks produced.
