Target Detection during Image Transmission with a TV System,

Abstract

An experimental investigation was made of the capacity of human beings to detect and recognize ground targets on television transmission system screens. A sequence of images was presented to several test persons. They are asked to recognize certain targets in as short a time as possible and were asked to localize them. The subjective evaluation in the case of pair comparisons was also included in the evaluaton. The purpose of the investigations was to find the detection time as a function of the transmission bandwidth (of the video signal), the contrast and the various image enhancement possibilities.
