Harvard Extensible Languages Program.

Abstract

The report describes the achievements of the research program carried out at Harvard University, investigating programming systems, particularly those based on extensible programming language technology, which facilitate the programming of complex software. Projects undertaken include extensive development of the ECL programming system and of its base language EL1; study of control structures for extensible languages which resulted in a model and stack implementation technique providing a viable mechanism for extensible control structures; implementation of a compiler for the EL1 language cojoined with study of general problems in the efficient compilation of extensible programming languages; and investigation of issues in the automation of programming, most specifically the very high level optimization of large programs. The report references various published papers and technical reports which contain more detailed accounts of the achievements of this research project. (Author)
