Electromagnetic Instabilities, Filamentation, and Focussing of Relativistic Electron Beams.

Abstract

The authors report nonlinear studies of the Weibel instability of a relativistic electron beam in a plasma. If (n sub b) << (n sub p), the beam splits into self-pinched filaments at density (n sub p). These filaments then recombine into a single dense beam, from which the return current is expelled. A fraction about nu/gamma of the beam energy is lost to magnetic energy, and significant plasma heating occurs. (Author)
