Accelerometer Guided Boring of Major Caliber Gun Barrels.

Abstract

The practicability of a deep-hole boring guidance system was proven by the highly successful Laser Guidance System. However, the laser system, to some degree, was dependent on the rotational speed of the piece being bored. To enhance the possibilities of a more versatile and successful boring system, during the last phases of the laser program, the accelerometer guidance was substituted for the laser. All other components remained unchanged. After boring six MK 19 5 inch/54 barrels, it was proven that the accelerometer guidance system was accurately guiding the boring bar. The six barrels were bored with an average runout error of less than 0.005 inch. (Modified author abstract)
