Development of NDT/I for Integral Wing Fuel Tank Structures using Infrared Thermography.

Abstract

Infrared thermography was successful in detecting flaws in wing tank structures through changes in temperature pattern under controlled conditions. The flaws detected by Thermovision included voids, cracks, indentations, a loose fuel inspection plate, defective counter sunk screws, material imperfections and damaged honeycomb sections. Laser beams used as a heat source have a limited capability in providing heat patterns of defective materials scanned by Thermovision, but are worthy of further investigation with some modifications.
