Effect on Ray Theory Solution of a Perturbation of the Velocity Structure,

Abstract

The modification of the ray theory field by perturbations of the velocity structure is studied by means of a perturbation theory. Successive orders of the new field are shown to satisfy the original Helmholtz equation with the inhomogeneous term describing a volume distribution whose density is given in terms of lower order fields. The Green's function has the same form for each order. For the case of horizontal stratification, the calculations are greatly reduced. Further, problems are pointed out or suggestions are made concerning convergence, the emphasis on forward scattering, and the effect on higher order solutions of caustics in the zero order solution.
