The Synthesis of Aldos-4-Ulose Derivatives and Branched-Chain Sugars.

Abstract

The synthesis of some derivatives of aldos-4-uloses and the properties and reactions which are relevant to postulated in vivo processes have been studied. D-xylohexopyranos-4-ulose has been prepared and characterised. Methyl-beta-L-threopentopyranosid-4-ulose has been prepared, and its enolisation in deuterium oxide solution in the presence of pyridine results in slow replacement of the hydrogen atom at C-3 with deuterium. No branched-chain sugars were formed as major product in the acid-catalysed methanolysis of methyl beta-L-threopento-pyranosid-4-ulose dimethylacetal. (Modified author abstract)
