Development of Boron (on Carbon) - Aluminum Composite.
Abstract
E PROPERTIES. Processing variables of time, temperature and pressure were evaluated using boron fibers on both carbon, B(C), and tungsten B(W), substrates. Property evaluation was carried out using multi-ply v/o B(C)-2024 Al composite panels. The composite panels were fabricated by the foil-filament array, vacuum hot diffusion bonding process. Composite characterization included dimensional inspection, radiography, ultrasonic C-scan, mechanical testing, metallography, SEM and flatness measurement. In the 50 v/o B(W)-2024 Al system (using 550 KSI filament) average longitudinal tensile strength of 250.2 KSI and average transverse tensile strength of 36.5 KSI were obtained. In comparison, the 50 v/o B(C)-2024 Al system (using 480 KSI filament) average longitudinal tensile strength of 234.8 KSI and average transverse tensile strength of 19.1 KSI were obtained. The relatively low transverse strength in the latter system is attributed to filament splitting. (Author)
