Sanitary Landfill.

Abstract

A literature review provided information on the operation and design of sanitary landfills. Operational parameters reviewed included basic methods of operation, compaction procedures and expected in-place refuse densities, cover requirements, and site improvements. The engineering design considerations summarized were refuse decomposition (including production and control of leachate and gas); the use of information on hydrology, geology, climatology, and waste characteristics to evaluate and classify sanitary landfill sites; possible uses for a completed landfill site; and equipment and cost data. A novel mathematical analysis was performed to define optimum cell shape and size and minimum cover conditions in terms of the various, physical parameters of the landfill.
