Modification of a Commercially Available Viscometer for Photometric Determination of Erythrocyte Aggregation Potential.

Abstract

A standard Wells-Brookfield plate-cone microviscometer was modified so that the sample chamber could be transilluminated under shear. The transmitted light was monitored by two photosensitive transistors 180 degrees apart. The output was electronically summed and displayed on a strip chart recorder and digital voltmeter. The resulting records were quite free of oscillations. Absolute values for different shear rates could not be obtained but relative changes were reliably reproduced. Results compared favorably with those of previous investigators and interpretation of these results was considered to be as they described. The finished device is currently being used in this laboratory for studying changes in erythrocyte aggregation potential in various pathologic states. (Author)
