A Note on Discontinuities in a Nonlinear Hyperbolic Equation with Piecewise Smooth Data,

Abstract

The note considers the development of jump discontinuities in the solutions of scalar nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations with piecewise smooth data rather than smooth data. Exact expressions are derived for the time for the discontinuity to first appear and for its initial location. The main use of these results is to test computational techniques for solving problems in the solutions of which shocks are formed. Test model problems are considered for the one-space dimension case. A corresponding two dimensional case is also solved. (Author)
