Aerodynamics and Flight Environment.

Abstract

Based on the exact nonlinear Boltzmann equation, an important criterion for the overshoot of hypersonic cone drag at high altitude is developed in terms of the Mach number, Knudsen number, and the cone angle. A new and unified asymptotic theory for the unsteady gas flow problem is also developed directly from the Boltzmann equation, bypassing any intermediate macroscopic assumptions of the gas. Similar theory is developed for the unsteady flow problem in a fully ionized plasma in the presence of a strong or weak magnetic field. (Modified author abstract)
