A Finite Element Analysis of Wave Propagation in Human Spine.

Abstract

A finite element model for the dynamic configuration and force responses of the initially curved human spine has been developed in the first part of this report. The layered media column with alternate discs and vertebrae, variable lengths and cross-sectional areas along the spine has been accounted for. Application of a +Gz implusive loading results in the simultaneous propagation of the axial, bending and shear deformations in this initially curved, inhomogeneous beam-column. The effects of rotatory inertia has also been included. The model takes into account two distinctly different wave speeds - a faster one for axial and bending deformations and a slower one for the shear deformation. The second part is a scheme for the stress analysis of a typical disc-vertebra interface for a given dynamic moment, shear and axial force. (Modified author abstract)
