Maintainability Demonstration Cost Savings Analysis.

Abstract

Where equipment can be put back into operation by a quick remove, and replace operation maintenance repair times can be adequately described with an exponential distribution. A new test plan on the mean is introduced, which assumes an exponential distribution of maintenance repair times and is based upon the chi square statistic. An adoption and use of this test plan could save the government as much as $2,400 on each maintainability demonstration. At higher levels of maintenance, the distribution of repair times was predominantly log normal. However, there were some exceptions. Test Plans 1 and 2 of MIL-STD-471A can safely be used in these situations. It is also, pointed out that an optimum test plan for the log normal distribution, and other two parameter distributions would test for the mean and stadard deviation of the distribution. Therefore, a new test plan is introduced, which tests for the standard deviation of the maintenance repair time distribution. (Author)
