Compressional Wave Power Spectrum from Seismic Sources

Abstract

The power spectra of P wave signals are studied. Data from the 22 long period (LP) and short period (SP) sensors of the NORSAR array in Norway is used. For each type of sensor, the signals from all sensors are combined in an optimum way to produce average LP and SP spectra. Bias due to noise power is removed, the instrument responses are corrected for and the LP and SP spectra merged together. About 150 events are treated, of these the LP signals are analyzed for about 20 events. The earthquake and explosion spectra agree well with the predictions of analytical source models.
