Assessment of Ultrasonic NDT Interrogation.

Abstract

The purpose is to evaluate the feasibility of detecting and characterizing small flaws (i.e. of the order of 1-100 microns) in materials by means of ultrasonic interrogation techniques. The scope of the effort encompasses an examination of the physical characteristics to be measured and their relation to the actual observable data obtained by measurement; an examination of the relation of measurement and perceptual theory to the specific measurement under consideration; the empirical evidence available for the feasibility of actually accomplishing the desired measurement; an analytic examination of the feasibility and appropriateness of the recommended technique that will have evolved from the above considerations; and finally, an overview of the current-state-state-of-measurements with relation to the instrumental requirements for the suggested approach.
