The Synergistic Effect of Pressure and Oxygen and Its Relationship to Decompression Sickness in Mice.
Abstract
The study was undertaken to explore the possibility of an interaction between total pressure and oxygen partial pressure and its possible effects on decompression. Four hundred and eighty male albino mice were given a 30-minute hyperbaric exposure at pressures of 14.1, 14.6, and 15.2 ata. At each of these pressures 40 mice, eight at a time, were exposed to one of four oxygen partial pressures: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 ata. Following the pressure exposure the mice were rapidly decompressed to the surface, where they were observed for five minutes. Manifestations of decompression sickness were graded while the mice were exercised in a rotating cage. (Modified author abstract)
